The Secret Below was my aerial debut. It is a story adapted from Hans Christian Andersen’s The Little Mermaid directed by Sara Zepezauer. This is not Disney’s fairy tale version.
I played the role of the sister who races to the surface to hand the little mermaid a knife to kill the prince before the sun goes down and then she can live. She loves him and so she decides to die and turn into the foam of the sea rather than kill a man who left her for another woman. In this show I play many roles but my favorite part was my solo silks act. I was a mermaid so my legs were tied together and I can only climb the silks with my arms. I had a knife in my mouth that I incorporated into the entire dance. It was still in my mouth while being spun around only holding onto a loop at the top of the silk with my ankles. It was the first aerial show I was ever a part of and to this day remains my favorite. I was challenged in so many ways. We performed it at my main training space, The Loft, in Buschwick. The three flights of stairs and dark underground Brooklyn feeling made this show one that my family who came to see it will never forget.
